Extra Info

  1. Mainsail roach: Can the top of the mainsail have a very short almost horizontal section (which extends back beyond the headboard) before descending? I'm not sure if this is possible but I was reading you get better wind flow if the top of the sail is a bit more like the outer edge of an airplane wing instead of just coming to a point (which may create vortices which disrupt windflow). I'll re-measure backstay clearance (more precisely this time) to see if a small square top and a bit more roach are possible. If there is enough room to backstay then can that be done?
  2. Mainsail luff curve: There are 3 x sets of measurements provided being 'Luff curve', 'Fanned luff' and 'Before BSeam'. Please correct me if wrong but I take it the first one 'Luff curve' is the one that represents the curve of the finished product (and the other two are for designer/cutting/fabrication purposes only). Based on that the currently proposed luff curve of the finished product is to be a maximum of 97mm from the straight line in the middle of luff, and tapering away to nil at top and bottom. I've been agonising over this measurement as I don't want to get it wrong and from what I've read this affects our ability to flatten the main (and therefore point higher) when going upwind. We have a fractional rig and although the mast curve is only about 75mm with backstay off it increases to about 150mm with backstay on full. I'm thinking a 130mm curve may be better than 97mm in our case - as the mast will then flatten out the main when we apply more backstay tension? Can I have your thoughts on this please? I can double check measurements with backstay on/off over the weekend.
  3. Boom cover: do you think my existing boom cover will fit the new headsail ok? I've been reading the new laminates don't initially pack down that well - compared to an old dacron sail like ours.I also read that older covers can let in more UV light than a new one - resulting in a new sail deteriorating faster than with a newer bag. I may need to reconsider the boom bag if this is hte case. If I was to do this you previously quoted $340 and could we get it with the tenara thread at that price considering the sail bag no longer needs tenara? I'm blowing our budget already but if it is worth it will do this.
